This film reminds me of my own childhood and the struggle to find a place in the world. I was raised by former hippies who took a sharp turn into a fundamentalist Christian cult.
We mostly lived at the fringes of society, but both my parents gave me gifts strange and out-of-step though they were that have helped me carve something unique in a mostly homogenous world.
I loved the sense of tribal camaraderie, discipline, and rugged code of honor in this film. I also identified with the pain of the intense, sincere young man the oldest son as he came to realize that he was good enough to make it in "normal" society, but that he would also stand out like a parakeet among sparrows.
This film is inspiring because of its reminder that we are all unique if we choose to be, and that we have a right to pursue that singular shape of ourselves to the ends of the earth--society be damned if need be.

Here they are learning, training, surviving off the land. However, the children's bipolar mother is in hospital under close watch having had a serious downturn in which other mental health concerns take a hold and eventually she succumbs.
Distraught and determined the family make their way across the USA to her funeral set up by their religeous grandfather who blames the husband for making her condition worse.
He is warned off that if they come near the funeral he'll have the husband to his dead daughter arrested. This is a struggle of rights, autonamy, growing up, knowledge seeking, egos, preferences, incompatabilities and self realisation.
A strong rights of passage and fish out of water story if there ever was one. Brilliantly portrayed, fabulous settings, 1st class script, totally loved it.
Quirky and enchanting. It made me think about societal norms and yearn for an alternative to the rat-race.
Ultimately, though, we are measured by our capacity to love - a message strongly sent in this movie. The acting is top-notch, the script intelligent and its great to see Hollywood taking the lesser trod path.

For personal and non-commercial use only. I can't believe I almost didn't see it, it came across my screen as a total fluke. It moved me to tears repeatedly, a story told realistically with top notch acting across the board.
The script is just phenomenal and production is highest value. Mortensen delivers an incredible performance.
I'm speechless that anyone could think this as anything less than the masterpiece that it is. They say true art makes you feel things - this made me FEEL.
Do yourself a favor and watch this movie. A man this determined to live a survivalist life and instill his values and beliefs into his children would have already worked that stuff by now.
The family just come across as misfits. I feel this way every time I come from europe or see amewriucan tourists.
Anyway the family is absurd. It ends up being a parody of leftist pseudo intellectuals. When they celebrate noam Chomsky day, explain how they shouldn't make fun of religions or other people except for christians, and go on a "free the food" mission to rob a grocery store.
Its sort of funny, especially bc they dont realize they are making fun of themselves. I dont understand how this kid got into all the ivy league universities unless the grandfather made a bunch of donations either.
I think celebrating and worshiping Noam Chomsky is the funniest part though, especially when they say "all hail!
