I think Kathryn Bigelow is one of the best women in Hollywood to write and direct the movie's she does. This movie might not be The Hurt Locker, but the acting by everyone in this movie is absolutely amazing!
You can just feel the pain and emotions for these men and women. These things alone made me give it 5 stars.
I highly recommend this movie to everybody, even if it's just one time. I think this is an important part of history people should know about.
I'm really glad things are better today, but we still have a long way to go. Whether you buy or rent this, I can promise you won't be disappointed.
I really hope this gets an Oscar nomination. I will preface this by saying I grew up in Detroit. At the time of the riots, I was a teen living in a far suburb.
The riots were something that happened on TV that really had no meaning for me until I took the bus to Tiger Stadium and saw the burned out buildings and all the destruction still left a year later.
What really happened, I did not know and probably will never understand. My second preface will be to say that as a young adult, I for a few years worked at the Detroit Police Department headquarters as one of the first female operators, and it is impossible to exaggerate the uninhibited and unrelenting racist and sexist attitudes I encountered daily.
When they walked down the hall, you had to get out of their way, quickly. That was many years ago, but only a few years after the riots.
I found the contents unwrapped, scattered, and spit on. Seriously, I cannot make this stuff up -- female employees were forced to eat our daily meal sitting next to the toilets in the women's bathroom I had 30 minutes for lunch, no time to go out.
Yes, they actually put two tables inside the women's bathroom. Only males white and black, but seated at different tables were allowed to eat in the lunchroom, away from the sounds and smells of people urinating and defecating.
This went on for the three years I was there and who knows how long after. I could write a book about how female crime victims were treated.
I saw him every day at work, and he was, without question, mentally unstable, but still on the job, just being given some time to not hurt anyone before he was put back on the streets.
I was glad for myself when he was, but fearful for others. He terrified me; he lived to hate. I also worked with a few white male cops who were kind, generous and caring.
Unfortunately, there weren't as many of them. There was one sergeant whose retirement broke my heart; I truly adored him, such a sweet man.
There were some who became cops because they sincerely wanted to help people and make the world a better place. I remember them with great admiration.
As for the black cops, same thing: some very good, some rotten to the core. So, the movie? I thought it was brilliant.
Is it accurate? Can I believe it happened as it did, or close to it? Yes, absolutely. If you don't believe it could have happened as shown, you are mistaken.
I knew some of the Detroit is my town. I knew some of the narrative already. The movie is well done and well worth the price of admission.
It is interesting to me because I now live in the same area in which the action took place. The town has really made a strong comeback from its earlier decline.

Even though I liked this movie, it saddened me that one human being can treat another human being as poorly as this group of men were treated.

I was 15 years old in , old enough to be aware of the riots that happened at the time in that American city. The first half sets the scene.
Riots develop after the police break up an illegal drinking den and arrest everyone they find inside, including some recently-returned Vietnam veterans.
The rioting soon turns into widespread looting and arson, with the authorities losing control of the streets, and resorting to calling in the National Guard to keep order.
A curfew is imposed, thousands arrested, and many killed. This section has a documentary feel, much like watching news reports, or fly on the wall filming with police.
This is aided in part by occasional use of actual footage from , and contemporary commentaries too. It is during this build-up that we meet our collection of disparate characters.
A few edgy, racist cops, keen to shoot first and ask questions later. Four young men in a vocal group, The Dramatics, a real group keen to get a recording contract.
A black security guard, a man working two jobs, and being called in to protect shop premises from being looted.
Two young white women visiting from Ohio, staying at a cheap motel and being very friendly with all the other mostly black guests.
These are the characters who will all finally come together at the Algiers Motel, on a fateful night at the height of the riots.
The second section of the film looks at the events at the Algiers, and the nightmare that unfolds in its small rooms, and claustrophobic hallway.
When one guest jokingly fires a starting pistol to panic the National Guard, police and troops converge on the motel, fearing a sniper is in one of the rooms.
They round up all those inside, and the cops line them up to interrogate them. Beatings and shootings follow, with the attitude of the police made worse by finding the two white girls in the company of black men.
Remembering this is , racist language and behaviour abounds, and some very unpleasant treatment is dished out to the hapless suspects. The last part of the film deals with the issues following that night.
The trial of police officers involved, the framing of innocent people, and the post-traumatic problems that some survivors are left with.
American justice is badly served, and the viewer is left with no doubt that the authorities handled the situation very badly.
So, is it any good? It is very good in fact, though perhaps not as wonderful as some reviews would have me believe. The sets and costumes all feel authentic, and the feel of the s is meticulously portrayed, including an evocative soundtrack of Motown music.
I hardly recognised any of the cast, and that is a good thing, as it helped me to believe in their characters.
Scenes at the motel are suitably tense and worrying, and the actors cast as very nasty out of control police officers do an excellent job.
Definitely worth watching. Having been to the museum in Memphis to Martin Luther King last year and bought several films on the subject , when this was released, I bought it.
