Nightmarebeaks produce the same growl, but with an increased echo and distortion. They move extremely fast, even faster than a Terrorbeak and will try to bite the player when close to it.
Sometimes a Dread Eye will spin in place and spawn Shadow Spikes in a big area around it. Unlike Terrorbeaks, Dread Eyes must stop in place to attack the player, making it really easy to dodge their bite attack.

After reaching a certain health threshold the Dread Eye will teleport away and disguise itself as a random prop like a tree, a rock, or a grass tuft.
While hiding it will spawn Shadow Eyes near the player. If the player doesn't manage to find it in time it will heal itself by hp and resume the attack.
Dread Eyes drop Nightmare Fuel and restore Sanity by 29 points when killed which is almost enough to cause Shadow Creatures to become neutral again for characters with a maximum Sanity of or less.

At times it could be a drag if it wasn't focusing on its titular reptilian monster. Sometimes the delirious plot had too many unwanted distractions corrupt mayor getting in the way of the fun, when I just wanted some monster-on-the-loose carnage.
Those moments are clumsily staged, but they look better thanks to nice gore FX involving icky, bubbling makeup effects.

The basic tactic when fighting any of these Shadow Creatures is kiting them, by waiting for them to attack, dodging the attack then hitting them.
Since they teleport away when damaged, the player won't be able to hit them more than once. However it is possible for them to teleport within the melee range, allowing the player to land a second hit.
It is recommended to always swing twice in case this occurs. Be careful not to reach 0 sanity or the Creeping Fear may spawn, turning an already hard fight into a nightmare.
If this happens it is recommended to ignore the Creeping Fear and run in a straight line focusing on killing the Terrorbeaks that stray away from the group until gaining enough sanity for them to despawn.
Since they are only visible to the player, mobs cannot be recruited to defend against Shadow Creatures.
