One for the history books. John Hamm Mad Men, Baby Driver stars in this typically unnerving Black Mirror episode a Christmas special , in an isolated cabin where two men reveal their dark pasts to each other — but why exactly are they doing it?

Looking at themes of surveillance, pickup culture, and taking the concept of 'blocking' someone on social media to its natural and horrifying conclusion, this isn't quite one for Christmas morning — but who are we to judge your family traditions?

Hang the DJ Season 4 offers a curious spin on the modern dating show, where every relationship is given a time limit based on the projected compatibility of the couple.

But can an algorithm really calculate love? Naturally, things aren't that simple, but the chemistry or lack of of the onscreen parties makes for one of the most touching and heartwarming Black Mirror episodes ever.

It takes place in a world where social media 'likes' and star ratings have become the most important social currency we have, where your followers and shares literally decide the kind of home you can live in, job you can have, and the kind of company you can keep.

Anyone with an Uber rating under 4. The opening episode of Season 5, Striking Vipers is a confident exploration of fidelity, male friendship, and the way identities shift and change in digital spaces — looking at what happens when a VR fighting game in the vein of Street Fighter or Tekken gets too realistic for its own good.

Oh, and there's some great fight sequences too. Starring Anthony Mackie — that's 'The Falcon' for you Marvel fans — as well as Pom Klementieff, who plays Mantis in the Guardians of the Galaxy films, there's some real blockbuster talent on offer.

Striking Vipers ultimately decides to sidestep the more difficult questions around straight and queer sexuality — disappointing given the bold San Junipero — but there's still plenty here to keep you thinking.

You couldn't have this list without Black Mirror: Bandersnatch , an interactive choose-your-own-adventure movie that let viewers choose the direction of the story.

It follows young programmer Stefan played by Dunkirk's Fionn Whitehead , who attempts to turn a cult novel called Bandersnatch into a video game that lets players choose the direction of the story.

While the production does not use linking elements, the series has included allusions and Easter eggs from previous episodes into later ones.

For example, " Hated in the Nation " in the third series calls back to the events of both the first series episode " The National Anthem " and the second series episode " White Bear ", [7] while the final episode of the fourth series " Black Museum " includes references to each prior episode of the series.

However, over time the use of Easter eggs became more purposeful, as to establish a canon of the "dream universe" that the episodes take place in.

However, Brooker asserted that the Easter eggs in Black Mirror are only there "as an extra bit of texture for fans of the show", and not meant to fully construct an atlas of Black Mirror episodes that becomes essential for understanding any episode.

Giles Harvey comments in a profile of Brooker for The New Yorker that each episode "establishes the background of normality against which a decisive tweak will stand out all the more starkly".

Harvey notes that the series' diverse range of genres show that it is "manifestly the work of someone who has clocked up many hours of screen time".

He further comments that Brooker is "scrupulous", as "the believability of each episode depends on maintaining the complex internal logic of its dystopic world".

Brooker is involved during the filming and editing processes, pointing out any inconsistencies that arise, and is "determined to make the devices and screens and interfaces used in 'Black Mirror' seem authentic".

As examples of Brooker's "meticulous attention to detail", Harvey reports that Brooker carefully considered whether a falling wine bottle would shatter in the nested virtual realities of " Playtest ", and whether it would rain in the eponymous location in " San Junipero ".

An instance of realistic technology is the email system in " Be Right Back ", which contrasts with "histrionic computers" found in Hollywood; an email is sent to the main character with the heading "Martha, people in your position bought the following", containing various books on the topic of grief-counseling.

The series' inception was in Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones served as executive producers; the two had begun to work together on Charlie Brooker's Screenwipe , a television review programme which aired from to The first pitch, to the head of comedy at Channel 4, was for eight half-hour episodes written by different people.

Technology was a lesser focus, and the worlds were larger and more detailed, which Jones said was not possible to execute properly in the short runtime.

The series was then commissioned for three hour-long episodes. The second script was "Inbound", which episode was never produced; it was about war and contained concepts which were later repurposed for the series 3 episode " Men Against Fire ".

The following script pitched became " The National Anthem ", the first episode to air. The third episode is " The Entire History of You ".

The programme was produced by Brooker's production company Zeppotron, for Endemol. Joel Collins served as production designer, with his company Painting Practice working on visual effects.

In , Robert Downey Jr. In the early stages of Black Mirror , Jones was keen to avoid casting comedy actors, as Brooker was previously a comedy writer, and they wanted the series to not feel like comedy.

The first series was popular and critically well received, although viewing figures decreased throughout the series. The series was expensive for Channel 4, as the anthology format meant there were no economies of scale , but it was commissioned for a second series.

Series 2 consists of three episodes. Brooker described it as "more epic in scale, but more intimate in scope". The episodes are more "understated" in their technologies.

Brooker commented that the second series mirrors the first: the first series has topics of in order "warped political satire", "dystopian hellscape", and "relationship torn apart by technology", while the second series presents episodes of these forms in reverse.

A trailer for the second series was made by Moving Picture Company and featured three interspersed storylines: "a dream sequence, the repetitive factory setting and the huge dust cloud that sweeps through the street at the ad's climactic end.

According to Brooker, the series was still taking its budget from the comedy department of Channel 4, and there was discussion of whether it should fall under the drama department instead.

Shane Allen, head of comedy for Channel 4 at the time, stated in that someone had been taken aback by the budget for Black Mirror , which was well above the standard for a comedy, and became involved in the editorial process.

A new head of comedy had been hired, who did not have a relationship with Brooker and Jones. Brooker reported in that Channel 4 agreed on a third series of four episodes, but requested detailed synopses of the episodes in advance.

Brooker came up with an episode "Angel of the Morning", which would later become a story in " White Christmas ".

He also conceived of an episode based on the earlier script "Inbound" which would have been similar to a later series 3 episode, "Men Against Fire".

Another episode was named "Crocodile", which overlapped in parts with the series 4 episode of the same name. After a lengthy wait, Brooker and Jones were told that the ideas "weren't very Black Mirror ".

Though Channel 4 may have suggested doing a one-off special, Jones said that "we felt there wasn't any clarity from the channel". Jones and Brooker worked on other projects for the next year, such as the comedy procedural A Touch of Cloth.

After bumping into a Channel 4 staff member, Brooker emailed the channel to ask about how to continue with Black Mirror.

Channel 4 had the budget for an hour-long Christmas special, but Jones and Brooker pushed for a minute episode. The episode aired on 16 December On the day of the press screening for "White Christmas", Brooker and Jones had a meeting with Channel 4 executives, who told them that they wanted to continue the series but due to budget constraints, it would need to be a co-production.

The pair had travelled to Los Angeles a few months prior to try to get co-production money but were unsuccessful. The channel also suggested that Brooker could write an episode of Electric Dreams , a adaptation of short stories by Philip K.

In December , the first two series of the programme were released on Netflix in the United States after they bought exclusive streaming rights, leading to increased attention for the programme.

Brooker and Jones reported in that although they and Netflix were both keen to have Channel 4 as equal partners, they could not get a meeting with Channel 4.

They eventually got a meeting without discussion of a co-production with Netflix, where the channel suggested a renewal for three episodes.

The channel later offered six episodes if full treatments could be given in advance, but Brooker and Jones were concerned due to past rejection of ideas.

They had a limited time to reply to US offers and chose to make a deal with Netflix. In September , Netflix officially commissioned 12 episodes of Black Mirror.

In a press release, Channel 4 say that they "offered to recommission Black Mirror ". This marked the first time that an online streaming service had gained the rights to a series when the original network had wished to renew it.

In developing the third series' stories, Brooker had looked back to the first two series and the Christmas special and recognised that all the stories were about characters becoming trapped in a situation from which they could not escape.

Coupled with the anthology format that asked for viewers to get immersed within the stories to understand the nature of each, this created a sense of darkness and horror, which could make it difficult to watch successive episodes without becoming uncomfortable.

With the third series, Brooker wanted to explore different formats, still having a few "trap" episodes but adding more conventional stories like a romance and police procedural, making the new series more digestible for the viewer.

The first episode that Brooker wrote for the series was " San Junipero ", and it was an intentional departure from previous episodes as well as a "deliberate raspberry-blow" at fans who were concerned at the series' Americanisation.

The titles of the six episodes that make up series 3 were announced in July , along with the release date. According to Brooker, the fourth series has even more variety in the episodes than in previous series.

In May , a Reddit post unofficially announced the names and directors of the six episodes in series 4 of Black Mirror.

The first episode made for series 4 was "Arkangel", which was directed by Jodie Foster and filmed in Canada. The Netflix budget allowed them to set and film "Crocodile" in Iceland and make the special effects-intensive episode "Metalhead".

The messages were sent from the account "iamwaldo" and read, "We know what you're up to. Watch and see what we will do.

The first Black Mirror full-length film Bandersnatch was released on Netflix on 28 December , after being formally announced the day prior. Set in , the film follows Stefan, portrayed by Fionn Whitehead , a young programmer who begins to question reality as he adapts a sprawling fantasy novel into a video game and soon faces a mind-mangling challenge.

In December , when Brooker and executive producer Annabel Jones were asked about possibly creating a fifth series of Black Mirror , they said, "We would love to do it.

In October , Brooker said that he had ideas of where sequels to both " White Bear " and " Be Right Back " would go, but it was unlikely that either would be made.

When asked in interviews, Brooker has repeatedly stated that there are no plans for a sequel episode to "San Junipero". Around January , Brooker and Jones announced their departure from House of Tomorrow, the show's production company with the Endemol Shine group which the two had led, during their negotiations with Netflix that had started mid Variety reported that intellectual property issues were at the center of this change, with the series' rights held by Endemol.

In a May interview with Radio Times , Brooker questioned whether the public mood would suit a sixth season of Black Mirror and said that he had been working on more comedic projects.

The first series has been praised as being creative and shocking with twists-in-the-tale reminiscent of The Twilight Zone.

The satire was so audacious, it left me open-mouthed and squealing. Rather like that poor pig. In its second series, Black Mirror continued to receive praise.

To my mind it's the best thing Brooker has done. Wen Bai at Information Times thought the second series was still "cannily made", and "near perfection".

In December , Stephen King noted his admiration for the series. Ben Beaumont-Thomas of The Guardian praised the comic satire of the episode and noted that "sentimentality is offset with wicked wit, and Brooker's brio and imagination paper over any gaps in logic.

Monahan equated the episode with the stronger of the previous Black Mirror episodes, stating that "it exaggerated present-day technology and obsessions to subtle but infernal effect, a nightmare-before-Christmas reminder that to revere our digital gizmos is to become their pathetic slave.

Journalists have reported that some of the concepts in Black Mirror have come true, in fashion, within the real world and have called the series a Magic 8-Ball for the future.

I'm kind of getting used to it, because it seems like it's quite often that there are things that are in the stories that come true.

The conceptual vehicle drew numerous comparisons with its fictional counterpart, [] [] and the official Twitter account for Black Mirror commented on the announcement, saying, "We know how this goes.

Released on 19 January , the four shorts vary between eight and 21 minutes in length. The shorts were later released on 10 June on channels of individuals who feature in them.

The book features sections on each of the 19 episodes in the first four series, containing conversational interviews from cast and crew and images from the episodes and behind the scenes.

In June , Brooker announced a series of novels based on Black Mirror that will offer "new, original, darkly satirical stories that tap into our collective unease about the modern world".

Brooker will edit three volumes of novellas that will feature anthology short stories by different authors. Based on the third series episode " Nosedive ", the board game Nosedive was produced by Asmodee.

Released on 25 November , the game requires between three and six players and is designed to last for roughly 45 minutes.

When the digital clone of new hire Nanette Cole is brought into his game, Cole's clone encourages the other copies to revolt against Daly.

After obtaining an in-simulation device that lets them communicate outside the private server, Cole's clone blackmails the real Cole to distract Daly long enough for the digital clones to take over Callister and escape off the private server, while Daly, trapped within the simulation at the onset of a game patch, ends up motionless in the real world.

Marie briefly loses track of her three-year old daughter Sara, and decides to have her implanted with the Arkangel system, allowing Marie to use a tablet to track her, monitor her health and emotional state, and censor sights she doesn't want Sara to see, such as blood.

As Sara grows up, Marie recognises that Arkangel is hampering Sara's growth, but the tracking device cannot be removed; instead, Marie disables the tablet.

As Sara becomes a rebellious teenager, Marie becomes distrustful of her and reactivates Arkangel, discovering her to be taking drugs with a boyfriend Marie does not approve of.

When Sara sneaks off to spend the night with her boyfriend against Marie's orders, Arkangel warns Marie, and Marie secretly gives Sara emergency contraception pills, causing her to get sick at school.

Sara returns home and finds Marie has reactivated Arkangel; Sara beats Marie with the tablet, unaware of how much harm she has done due to the censoring filter, and runs away, Marie calling after her in vain.

Shazia sees one memory that has Mia as an eyewitness to the accident, and approaches Mia about her help in the investigation.

Mia is unable to avoid helping, and Shazia sees Rob's murder in her memories. Though Shazia promises not to say anything even to her husband, Mia kills her, and then travels to her home to kill her husband and their infant child, preventing anyone from using a similar device to identify her presence.

Police investigating the deaths find that the infant was blind and would have not seen the culprit, but use the memory device on the pet guinea pig, and close in on Mia as she watches her son's school play.

Tim Van Patten. Frank and Amy are two of several that participate in the System, where they are instructed by a personal device called the Coach to meet other people and spend a pre-determined amount of time with them.

Frank and Amy are matched for a short period but both find themselves attracted to each other. After several more assignments, the two are rematched by Coach, but Amy insists they not look at the time prescribed by Coach.

They spend much time together, but Frank is drawn to look at the time given by Coach, and finds that initially lasting several years, his action caused the time to reduce considerably.

They are both soon rematched, with Amy assigned to a new partner that will be her permanent pair. Amy asks Coach for her to see Frank one last time, during which she encourages to break the System, fleeing the area and climbing over an impossibly high wall.

Robotic guard-dogs have turned against humans, leaving the few human survivors to fend for themselves. While trying to retrieve supplies from a warehouse, Bella's companions are killed by the robots, but she manages to flee and evade their tracking devices.

After eluding a sole robot by exhausting it of its power, Bella makes her way to a secured home, finding a shotgun and other weapons.

However, the robot, after recharging, finds her trail. Bella manages to blind the robot and then destroy it with the shotgun, but not before the robot fires off more tracking devices, several of which embed themselves in her skin.

Bella considers pulling them out but recognizes it is futile as she would sever her carotid artery in the process.

As more robots swarm towards the house, she radios her base to let them know what happened. It is revealed Bella's team was trying to recover teddy bears for the survivors.

Colm McCarthy. Nish stops to recharge her car and enters the nearby "Black Museum", owned and run by Rolo Haynes. Rolo shows her various artifacts, all related to illicit technology that he had been involved with.

He describes several stories connected to them. One involves Dr Peter Dawson, a doctor who developed a device that allowed him to experience the pain of his patients to aid in diagnosis, but soon found pain giving way to addictive pleasure, and eventually killed a man to experience the sensation.

Another case involves Carrie, a comatose woman whose consciousness was transferred into her husband Jack, but when Jack started seeing another woman, he forcefully transferred Carrie into a plush monkey for their son Parker who soon discarded the toy as he grew up; Carrie still is alive within the plush at the museum.

Rolo shows Nish the star attraction of the museum, a holographic representation of the consciousness of convicted murderer Clayton Leigh that Rolo bought just prior to his electrocution, allowing visitors to electrocute him repeatedly.

Nish reveals that her visit was not incidental, as she is the daughter of Clayton, who was wrongfully convicted. After poisoning Rolo, Nish transfers Rolo's consciousness into Clayton's head, much like Carrie was transferred into Jack's head, forcing him to live through the last electrocution which overloads Clayton's synapses and wipes the digital copies of them both.

Rolo's agony is captured in a souvenir keychain which Nish takes along with the doll with Carrie's consciousness and shorts out the museum's electricity, starting a fire.

Nish drives off with her mother, her consciousness living within Nish, who tells her Clayton would be proud of her.

Young programmer Stefan Butler begins to create an adventure video game called Bandersnatch , based on a "choose your own adventure" book of the same name.

He pitches the game to Mohan Thakur, who works for video game company Tuckersoft, while Stefan works on the game at home on his own. Stefan begins to feel like he is being controlled and descends into madness in the same way that the book author Jerome F.

Danny lives with his wife Theo and son Tyler. His friend Karl introduces him to a virtual reality fighting game called Striking Vipers X , in which he can feel the physical sensations of his character.

Danny and Karl play as Lance and Roxette and after their first fight begins with kissing. They regularly have sex in the game until Theo confronts Danny about their deteriorating relationship.

Danny locks the game up. Several months later, Theo invites Karl around for dinner as a surprise for Danny's birthday, and Karl tells Danny that he has been unable to recreate the sensation felt when having virtual sex with him.

The pair have sex in the game again and then as an experiment kiss in real life; but neither feels anything. Karl still wants to continue doing it in the game and they begin brawling in an alley until a passing police officer arrests them.

Theo picks Danny up from the police station and presses him to tell her what caused the fight. Later, it is Danny's birthday again and it is revealed he is now permitted, by mutual agreement, to have virtual sex with Karl in Striking Vipers X on that day in return for Theo going to a bar once a year to pick up a strange man.

Chris works as a driver for Hitcher, a ridesharing company. He goes to a group therapy session where a mother talks about her daughter's suicide 18 months ago.

He has sex with her and afterwards she makes her daily attempt to access her daughter's Persona account before it locks her out.

The next day, Chris picks up Jaden, an employee of social media company Smithereen, and holds him hostage at gunpoint.

Police notice suspicious activity and chase the car until Chris swerves to avoid two cycling teenagers and comes to rest in the middle of a field.

By lying to Jaden about his gun being fake, Chris works out that the police are listening to him in the car through his phone.

He demands to speak to Billy Bauer in the next five minutes, threatening to shoot Jaden otherwise. Despite his employees advising against it, Billy accepts the call.

He then attempts to take his own life, but Jaden tries to grab the gun off him. A sniper shoots as the pair grapple over the gun.

Rachel and Jack are sisters who live with their father after their mother's death. She dances to an Ashley O song at the school talent competition, but the routine ends badly.

Meanwhile, Ashley O refuses to take pills given to her by Catherine, her manager and aunt, and plans to use the illegal activity as a way to get out of her contract.

Catherine realises this and puts the powdered pills into her food, to put her in a coma. When Ashley Too sees that Ashley O is comatose on a news report, she malfunctions.

Jack manages to remove part of the software from her and the doll comes to life, claiming to be a digital copy of Ashley O which previously had a limiter on its brain function.
