March 31, Full Review…. View All Critic Reviews Jul 15, I had heard so much about based on true story film, " the Conjuring " from word of mouth that I finally decided to check it out.
And I had to admit that I enjoyed myself and thought it was well worth seeing. Everyone may have their own view as to what is considered really " scary" to themselves.
But I have to at least say that I found the Conjuring definitely to be " creepy" enough to enjoy. With the Conjuring - which I tip my hat to the director James Wan and writers - because not only did I think this film had some creepy and jittery "jump-scare" moments in the film, but I also liked the way the dark areas of the house, the rooms, the corners, basement, stairs dark areas were displayed , they made it look eerie and macabre that's been an missing element in horror films for decades, IMO Much like the room the possessed girl Regan was tied up in the Exorcist.
Speaking of which, in terms of it being a demon-possession flick, it nor any other "entity" movie will ever be in that class Slowly creaking opening doors,..
And I thought the whole haunting demonic origin was well told. The way the film started out did remind me very much of the Amityville Horror, but unlike that film and it's ghostly encounters, it was well explained in this film why the terrified family group could not just pack up and leave.
I liked that the Conjuring more centered on atmosphere than with a lot of excess blood and gore and superficial CGI effects. There was only a couple of instants where director James Wan let that slip, primarily at the end.
I also liked that it had a very brief documentary-like atmosphere where you felt part of the investigating ghost-crew with the rolling camera.
The creepy sounding and wide screen camera angles were terrific and the cast and characters were well scripted and portrayed admirably. Particularly Lily Taylor and Vera Farmiga.
I didn't really get into the " Annabelle " doll, which was supposed to be one of the " gateway" tools to which demon spirits emerged into the lives of the living humans, I thought that the ending which one gets possessed to murder,- could have been a lot more intense and dramatic.
While the credits rolled at the end, you get to see the pictures of the real couple who the film was based that actually investigates Occult like haunting back In the 60's and 70's.
Overall I thought this film was a solid film that gives some spooky chills and thrills in periods of the movie, and although I was initially concerned that this would be one of those films where the trailer itself ends up being much better, exciting that the actual movie itself- I can say that's not the case here, and I was very much put at ease on that note after I finished watching the film.
This should easily be one of the scariest movies of the year. Too add I think it's an greater advantage and enjoyable thrill to see this at the movie theaters with the much greater sights and surrounding sounds vs at home on DVD or streaming.
On a Scale of 1 to 10, I'd give The Conjuring a 8. Apr 02, The generous look at the movie musical directed by Jon M.
Chu featured behind the scenes footage as well as glimpses of the big musical numbers. All the while, we are treated to Usnavi Anthony Ramos providing us with the soundtrack, singing the opening number from the musical.
In an interview in the video, Chu talks about how much he liked the musical. The footage was filled with an overwhelming amount of Latinx swag and the soul and vibe of the original musical was very much present.
In the original storyline of In the Heights , bodega owner Usnavi strikes it rich and plans to leave, until the pull of the Latino neighborhood and the people in it give him pause.
Set in the Upper Manhattan neighborhood of Washington Heights, the plot revolves around Usnavi, a college student, a taxi driver, a beauty salon worker and an old woman who aspire to better lives as gentrification begins to take hold, and a sweltering summer power blackout brings their personal life crises to a head.
Directed by Michael Chaves and written by David Leslie Johnson, the story follows Johnson who was charged with manslaughter for murdering his landlord Alan Bono.
He claimed that a demon had moved from year-old David Glatzel to his body and possessed him, making him to stab Bono.
It's something so rare in most horror films. Though this dynamic is certainly not presented through these two separate camps — the fearful and the experts — but the men bond over their love of cars and their wives and the women over the unfathomable: harm befalling their children.
It's a satisfying an utterly untapped approach for the genre. But "wait, wait" you proclaim "this is a horror movie after all, stop talking about the little girls and get to the scares!
The Conjuring is creepy, intermittently nightmarish, tense, gross, unsettling, and in its purest form, scary. This is the type of film that dares you not to hug yourself or laugh nervously in the hopes you deflect some iota of the sensation of primal fear.
But these emotions are never extracted in a manipulative fashion and the jump scares are orchestrated effectively through physical objects falling, bumping, banging and generally causing off-putting noises, not blaring, out of context musical chords.
The camera work is also fantastic employing every angle imaginable and even some very impressive point of view and upside-down-spin shots. It's easily Wan's best directed effort to date but never one that lets its style eclipse the mood.
Similarly his use of sound both in the score which utilizes your average brooding options as well as sharp, grating notes that call back to horror of days gone by and practical noises such as a strained rope swinging or a door slamming shut.
Again, it all adds to the experience and in eventually pulling of the major frights. Like most fare of this nature, the restrained tension does take a bit of a hit heading into the finale, as subtlety is sacrificed for more overt horror to resolve the story.
Thankfully this change in approach is handled with just as much aplomb and also manages to deliver one of the most effective exorcism sequences in recent memory — a victory made all the more notable thanks to the generally overexposed and silly nature of that staple.
It's not the perfect ending that the previous acts demanded but one that by no means insults the audience and still remains scary if in a more upfront manner.
Perhaps the biggest compliment I can pay The Conjuring is that it actually deserves a sequel. There are tales of the Warrens left to tell and the acting is uniformly strong enough that revisiting these characters would be more a treat then a chore.
It takes a skillful filmmaker to take well worn themes and approaches while avoiding gore and a high body count to boot and make them seem as original as ever.
Coming from a huge horror buff and one that experiences more disappointments then the average soul can handle, I can earnestly say The Conjuring is one of the best ever and what can serve as a fantastic induction into the genre for the uninitiated.
